Baden-Baden, the Black Forest, Frieburg

Baden-Baden was a Roman spa town as a result of a natural spring which is still flowing hot today. We attended an Orthodox Divine Service at a Russian Orthodox Church in the morning before we went to enjoy a very relaxing afternoon at one of the two hot spring resorts in town.

The Black Forest

The Romans called the forest black because the trees are too thick and the soldiers got lost in it. Historically it is the least developed part of Germany. As the Rhine River forms from melting snow water from the Swiss Alps, poor folks in the Black Forest would chop down woods to be floated down the Rhine to the low land for various building projects. It is commonly said that the entire Amsterdam is built using trees from the Black Forest.

We visited a gourmet market at the entrance of the Black Forest to try the world famous Black Forest cake!
It is not sweet, with the right balance of chocolate and cherry flavor.
