Cappadocia

We have arrived safely in Cappadocia and had an amazing time seeing the Cave Churches, the Underground City, and riding camels in the Red Valley!

Kaymakli Underground City

Early Christians (Cappadocia Greeks) escaped persecutions from the Romans in the 4th century and the latter Arab and Ottoman invasions by hiding in several huge underground cities in Cappadocia.

We visited the Monks Valley on our last day in Cappadocia. This is the site where St Simeon stayed as a hermit.

There are also hermits living in the caves, and by 11th century monastic communities mushroomed in the area and built rock-cut churches and living quarters.
Gideon and Carina did some rock climbing and were able to get to the second level of the hermit’s cell!
